TENTURE DE L'APOCALYPSE - CHATEAU D'ANGERS
Angers 49
Listed as a Historic Monument
Handed over by the Army to the Administration of Historic Monuments in 1947, the castle was the subject of a series of restoration and development campaigns and included the return to the castle of Angers of the Tapestry of the Apocalypse in 1953, and its presentation in a new building designed by the Chief Architect of Historic Monuments, Bernard Vitry. This building is developed according to an "L" plan along the south and east sides of the seigneurial courtyard.
After more than forty years of presentation to the public, the conservation conditions of this exceptional work (dating from 1373) and 106 meters long, proved to be insufficient. An alarming deterioration of the colors led to the closure of the gallery.
The operation therefore involved: - the restoration of the Vitry Gallery, its redevelopment, as well as the complete resumption of the hanging, lighting, hygrometry and air cleanliness arrangements defined by contemporary museographic criteria, - the restoration of the medieval buildings located within the grounds of the Palace of the Counts of Anjou and their opening to the public, - the creation of a vast underground volume under the terrace of the Logis Royal, on the same level as the Vitry Gallery, allowing the completion of a loop tour circuit around the courtyard of the quadrilateral. The construction of this underground room allowed the establishment of a specific reception area for visiting the Tapestry, with airlocks for acclimatization to light and dust extraction. The maintenance workshops of the Tapestry, the comfort and educational equipment, were made accessible to people with reduced mobility.
